Memorial Day was observed on Monday, May 29, 2017. Across the United States, we remember the service men and women who laid down their lives for our freedom. It’s also a time where we honor those who have served and are currently serving around the world. Because of their sacrifices, Americans are able to celebrate this day/weekend with family and friends they may not get to see often.
Residents at Westminster Towers Senior Living Community celebrated the 2017 Memorial Day with a delicious BBQ cookout providing by dining services. It was a beautiful day to get the grill all fired up with chicken, pork, and shrimp; and of course, all of the fixin’s as well – corn on the cob, potato salad, baked beans, banana pudding and more! A watermelon social followed later in the day in the Towers courtyard. Residents enjoyed music, corn hole and fellowship as we honored the numerous veterans that call Westminster Towers home. The Life Enrichment department recognized all veteran residents with a large display of their name, branch and years of service. In total, there were 42 names on the list. They represent the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and WAVES. Our veterans were also honored earlier in the month of May, with a spectacular performance by the 2082 Army Brass Quintet.
Many residents are too humble to speak about their years in service and the sacrifices they made. It’s amazing that many of them were able to live to tell their old war stories. To hear a first-hand account of their stories will give you goosebumps. We’re thankful and grateful for all that they did for us and our country. That should never be taken for granted.
